MapsBeverly and Qamanirjuaq barren ground caribou migrate each year in large herds, from winter range south of the treeline and along the Hudson Bay coast, to traditional calving grounds on the tundra in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. After calving in June, they generally travel southward to the treeline by August, rut in October, then move into the forest and coastal areas where they winter. On the following pages, you'll find maps of the herds' ranges, as well as maps showing locations for some Qamanirjuaq caribou monitored by satellite, and a current map of companies with mining interests on the calving grounds of the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq herds. You'll find more maps in the Map Atlas on the CD-ROM version of the BQCMB's comprehensive mapping project, Protecting Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou and Caribou Range. The Map Atlas includes maps showing caribou distribution and movements based on survey data from 1940-1995, as well as satellite-monitoring locations of caribou from 1993-1997.
