Mining interests on the caribou ranges

Land use activities across the ranges

Mineral exploration is unfolding at an unprecedented pace in Northern Canada. A uranium mineral exploration boom is transforming northern Saskatchewan and taking hold in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories as well -- all on the ranges of the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds. This October 2007 map, prepared by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) for the BQCMB, reveals land use permits, prospecting permits and mineral leases and claims on the caribou ranges of the two herds, along with mine locations, winter roads and major roads. Our thanks to INAC for this map.

Mining interests on the calving grounds

The number of government-issued prospecting permits, mineral leases and mineral claims is rising on the sensitive calving grounds, where disturbance has a more profound effect on the overall population of caribou herds than any other factor. This map, current to October 2007, shows companies and individuals with mining interests on the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq calving grounds. Our thanks to WWF-Canada for creating this map.

To discover how many prospecting permits, mineral claims and/or mineral leases companies and individuals own, and the length of time that these mineral tenures are valid, please click on the links below.
